Browser Requirements

When you login to ANGEL, you will see a "System Check" component on the login page.  Check this component to see if you have any red Xs and to see if your browser is supported.  If you have red Xs for Quicktime or Windows Media, it probably isn't a big deal and you likely won't run into any issues.  However, the other plugins should be installed for each browser that you will use for ANGEL. Please note: On some systems, there will be a red X next to Acrobat Reader even though Acrobat Reader is successfully installed and active.  If you see an X and you know you have Acrobat reader, you can ignore that X. 


The following browsers are currently supported:

Follow the links below for further browser setup information and to fix any red Xs:

Internet Explorer - Versions 7-10 (Internet Explorer 11 is NOT supported at this time.)
Firefox - Current Version
Chrome - Current Version
Safari - Current Version

NOTE: At this time, mobile versions of browsers are NOT supported.

I. Internet Explorer

Windows 8 Users:  You MUST use the version of Internet Explorer that is in Desktop mode.  The version in
"Metro" mode is limited and unsupported. 

ENABLE AJAX:
1.Open Internet Explorer
2.Select Tools
3.Select Internet Options
4.The Internet Options dialogue will appear.
5.Select the Advanced Tab
6.Scroll to the Security section and make sure "Enable native XMLHTTP support" is checked.

ENABLE JAVASCRIPT:
1.On the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and then click the Security tab.
2.Click the Internet zone.
3. If you do not have to customize your Internet security settings, click Default Level.
4. Click the Back button to return to the previous page, and then click the Refresh button to run scripts.

ENABLE JAVA:
It is likely you will already have Java installed on your system, but if not, you will need to download and install it manually:
1. Go to http://www.java.com
2. Follow the prompts to download and install Java.  Note: You won't have to do this for each browser.  Once Java is installed on your system, it will work across browsers. 

ALLOWING POP-UPS IN IE:
1.Open Internet Explorer
2.select Tools
3.Select Internet Options
4.The Internet Options dialogue will appear.
5.Select the Privacy Tab
6. To the right of the field called "Turn on Pop-up Blocker" click the button called "Settings"
7. Under "Address of web site to allow" type in either "elearning.kirkwood.edu" or "etonline.kirkwood.edu"
8. Select the "Add" button
9. Select "Close" and "OK"
NOTE: You only have to allow the current URL however you can also allow both.

QUICKTIME PLAYER:
1.Use the following link to go the Apple Download site
2.http://www.apple.com/downloads/
3. Scroll to find Quick Time
4. Select download
5. Follow the prompts

WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER:
1. Use the following link to go the Windows Download site
2. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/windows-media-player
3. Scroll to your operating system
4. Select the Green link that says something like “Media Feature Pack...”) in the “How to get it” column.
5. Follow the prompts

ADOBE READER:
1. Use the following link to go the Windows Download site
2. http://get.adobe.com/reader/?promoid=JZEFU
3.Follow the prompts


II. Firefox

ENABLE JAVASCRIPT/AJAX:
By default, these will all be enabled and no action is needed from the user.

ENABLE JAVA:
It is likely you will already have Java installed on your system, but if not, you will need to download and install it manually:
1. Go to http://www.java.com
2. Follow the prompts to download and install Java.  Note: You won't have to do this for each browser.  Once Java is installed on your system, it will work across browsers. 

ALLOWING POP-UPS IN YOUR BROWSER:
1.Open Firefox
2.Select Tools
3.Select Options on the Menu that opens
4.The Options dialogue will appear
5.In the Content section to the right of "Block pop-up windows" select the button called "Exceptions"
6.Under "Address of web site" type in "elearning.kirkwood.edu"
7.Select the "Allow" button
8.Select "Close" and "OK"

QUICKTIME PLAYER:
1.Use the following link to go the Apple Download site

3. Scroll to find Quick Time
4. Select download
5. Follow the prompts

MEDIA PLAYER:
1. Use the following link to go the Windows Download site

3. Scroll to your operating system

III. Chrome

Note: Ajax will be enabled by default.  No action is necessary by the user.

ENABLE JAVASCRIPT:
1. Click the menu icon Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
2. Select Settings.
3. Click the Show advanced settings... link.
4. Click Content Settings in the 'Privacy section.'
5. Select Allow all sites to run JavaScript in the 'JavaScript' section.

ENABLE JAVA:
It is likely you will already have Java installed on your system, but if not, you will need to download and install it manually:
1. Go to http://www.java.com
2. Follow the prompts to download and install Java.  Note: You won't have to do this for each browser.  Once Java is installed on your system, it will work across browsers. 

ALLOWING POP-UPS IN CHROME:
1.Select the "Customize and control Google Chrome" button, which is in the upper right hand corner and looks like 3 black lines.
2.Select Settings
3. Select "Show Advanced Settings"
4. In the "Privacy" section, Select the Content Settings button
5. In the "Pop-ups" section, select Manage Exceptions
6.Type in or paste in the URL for eLearning (https://elearning.kirkwood.edu)
7.Select ok, and close the tab

QUICKTIME PLAYER:
1.Use the following link to go the Apple Download site
2.http://www.apple.com/downloads/
3. Scroll to find Quick Time
4. Select download
5. Follow the prompts

MEDIA PLAYER:
1. Use the following link to go the Windows Download site
2. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/windows-media-player
3. Scroll to your operating system

IV. Safari

ENABLE JAVASCRIPT:
1.Open Safari
2.In the Edit drop-down menu at the top of the window, select Preferences...
3. Select the Security icon/tab at the top on the window.
4.Then, check the Enable JavaScript checkbox.
5.Close the window to save your changes.
6. Refresh your browser.

ENABLE JAVA:

4. Then, uncheck the Block pop-up windows.
5.Close the window to save your changes.
6. Refresh your browse
